Why the INDEAL Champion Model Works

Collaboration through digital connection

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a person who could bridge all the issues between manufacturers and dealers; someone who had the right tools and right technology to smooth what can often be the roughest connection in the contract furniture industry?

The industry has long been a sprawling, often fragmented ecosystem. On one side, you have the manufacturers, some large, some small; on the other, the dealers trying to solve complex spatial puzzles for their clients. In the middle is a chasm of logistical hurdles, lead-time frustrations and a dizzying array of product data. And that’s where the dealer designer sits.

In the past, the industry relied on legacy relationships (and luck) to bridge this gap. But last week at THE MART in Chicago, the INDEAL Champion Conference provided a better way forward. It proved that it’s these dealer designer “connectors” who keep the industry moving.

Dealer designers are the essential translators who turn a client’s abstract vision into a functional reality. While a manufacturer produces the “ingredients,” the dealer designer is the chef who understands how to combine them to satisfy a specific appetite.

A beautiful rendering means nothing if it doesn’t fit the floor plate or meet local fire codes. Dealer designers navigate the technical requirements of the trade, managing everything. They use complex software like CET Designer to ensure that what the client sees in a 3D model is exactly what arrives on the delivery truck.

Beyond logistics, these professionals are workplace strategists. They don’t sell desks; they solve design problems. Whether it’s improving acoustics for a focused engineering team or fostering serendipitous collisions in a tech hub, the designer curates the environment to boost productivity and retention. As workplace trends shift toward hybrid models and “resimercial” aesthetics, their ability to select the right commercial-grade products, textures, ergonomic tools and layouts is what makes an office feel like an important destination and team home.

Dealer designers are also the ultimate shield against costly mistakes. A single error in a large-scale furniture specification can result in tens of thousands of dollars in wasted product and weeks of project delays. By vetting lead times, checking finishes against durability standards and ensuring all components are compatible, they provide the peace of mind that allows a multi-million-dollar capital expenditure to succeed. They are the engine of the dealership, turning product catalogs into high-performance workplaces. The INDEAL Champions are the industry’s secret weapon. These are the technical and strategic anchors of their respective dealerships.

The contract furniture world can sometimes feel like a collection of silos. However, seeing Champions — some of whom were visiting Chicago for the first time — walk the halls of THE MART or venture into Fulton Market to see the latest from Fellowes, was a reminder of why being together is so important. When a dealer from Honolulu rubs shoulders with a designer from a Baltimore firm, the “us vs. them” mentality of competing dealerships evaporates. They become a collective brain trust, sharing tips on how to win bids and solve common headaches.

The INDEAL model, especially the Champion program, shines by facilitating intimate, small-group discussions between these dealers and Brand Partners, the manufacturers who inhabit the INDEAL program. It creates a dialog on important issues like lead-time volatility and communication breakdowns.

I like the INDEAL Champion Conference because it acknowledges that the office furniture industry is too complex for any one person to navigate alone. It requires a “Champion” at the dealership level who is empowered with the best tools and the best network.

The industry should take note. We need an industry that looks less like a series of disconnected islands and more like the vibrant, collaborative and tech-enabled community that took over THE MART last week.
