Design is often about creative problem solving. One of the most inspiring things about working in this industry is the absolute ability to have impact. Those who design have the power to create, inspire, and deliver something extraordinary that will change the way that people live and work.

Like any other strategic endeavor, designing a solution for improving employee health and well-being should start by understanding the problem you are trying to solve.

That’s one of the reasons why INDEAL Cares launched the I Care Employee Wellness Survey in 2020. This initiative, which was conceived at the start of the pandemic, had a primary aim to provide those working within the contract furniture industry with the opportunity to share their health and well-being goals with a unified voice – and one that could help to direct themes, programming, and action on the part of the industry – not only for the employees within this industry, but in all industries.

So what does this mean for us in the industry? For those people responsible for designing, empowering, and recruiting the best talent to take over for us? An increased imperative to connect employees to purpose, recognition and understanding.

At the start of the pandemic, there was a shared interest in collaboration and coming together that changed the way that employees felt and thought about their workplaces, not only in our industry, but everywhere. That shared commitment to well-being through the workspace has only been strengthened over time.

And that is why it’s so important to ask your team about what it is they want and need now.

Inspire Well-being Through Work

The I Care Employee Wellness Survey is an initiative that takes place every year in June with the goal of better understanding the well-being of individuals working in the contract furniture industry.

Now in its fifth year, the survey will provide valuable insights that will inform the priorities of the industry and will provide leaders and companies with the opportunity to truly commit to employee health.

That commitment is paying off. Last year’s survey results showed that employee health improved from the previous year.

In 2023, when we asked; “How would you describe your movement in your workspace on average over the past 12 months?” 68% of survey respondents described their movement in their workspace as either ‘excellent’ or ‘good’, which is in line with the responses we received in 2022 (67%).

However, when we asked: “What areas of your health would you like to improve?”

29% of respondents said, “Become more physically active and/or exercise more regularly” (an improvement from 43% in 2022)

35% of respondents said: “Improve my diet and/or lose weight” (down from 41% in 2022)

When asked; “What areas of your health would you like to improve?” we saw positive improvements in mental health assessments:

35% said: “Reduce my stress and anxiety” (down from 47%, reported in 2022)

27% said “Improve my mental health to feel happier” (down from 37%, reported in 2022)

18% said: “Enhance the quality of my sleep” (down from 41%, reported in 2022)

There is countless evidence to support the fact that when employees are engaged in the workplace, they’re more likely to be productive, motivated, and happy. Fulfilled employees also lead to higher retention rates. And although this is the case for all generations at work, it is increasingly becoming important for millennials and Gen Z – which are literally the future leaders of this industry and all industries.

By supporting the I Care Employee Wellness Survey, you are joining a community that believes in the power of philanthropy and inspiring healthy lives at work – ensuring a stronger industry now and in the future.  n
