We’ve all had conversations that sounded a bit like this: “Hey, can you give me an ETA on the DEI report? I was OTP working on some KPIs when I accidentally pulled up a NSFW website.”

While that might be a bit extreme when it comes to the overuse of workplace acronyms, I’m not too far off. If you are scratching your head, asking yourself, “What the heck did I just read?” you are not alone.

According to a new study, those are the top five searched workplace acronyms. A QR code generation site, QR Code Generator, used Google Keyword Planner to analyze the number of monthly searches for more than 60 workplace abbreviations to find which ones have Americans the most puzzled.

They looked at the total number of monthly searches on average for search variations such as ‘[abbreviation] meaning’, ‘[abbreviation] definition’ and ‘what does [abbreviation] stand for’.

NSFW ranks as the most confusing workplace acronym, with 233,439 average monthly searches. This is an abbreviation of Not Safe for Work and is used to highlight content that is not suitable for a workplace environment.

DEI comes second, with 209,075 average monthly searches. DEI stands for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, which is used to promote the representation of different groups of people regardless of race, age, gender, disabilities.

OTP ranks third, with 160,280 average monthly searches. OTP stands for On the Phone, which is used to indicate when someone is already occupied on the phone and may be unable to respond to other messages.

ETA comes fourth, with 133,794 average monthly searches. ETA stands for Estimated Time of Arrival, which is used to represent the expected completion or receival of a particular task or project.

KPI ranks fifth, with 98,618 average monthly searches. KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator, which is used to provide a quantifiable measure of performance and track the progress towards a specific business objective.

Making up the remainder of the top ten were the abbreviations; CRM, AWOL, AFK, DM and VPN. And if you are keeping score, CRM is customer relationship management, AWOL is absent without leave, AFK is away from keyboard, DM is direct message and VPN is virtual private network.

OK, I’ve gotta finish this column up by EOD (end of day) so I can take some PTO (paid time off). ICYMI (in case you missed it), we talk a lot about the workplace in this column. You could say that we are SME (subject matter experts). So if you are looking for more insights on work and the office, come back. We will BRB (be right back) next week.
