SPACE SOLUTIONS:

Reception and Waiting Areas

Reception spaces have been evolving for some time and probably will continue to as influences and the way we want to work change. It’s hard to land on how we feel about these spaces in a time when public spaces are fraught with feelings about post-pandemic protocol and how we use space together thoughtfully. Though they are sometimes the forgotten spaces, reception spaces and waiting areas are important spaces to harness and use more thoroughly. With more attention being directed to these areas in the past year, we have included a sampling of perspectives.

Reception Desk Design: How Office Interiors Welcome With Wow

The aging idea of the lobby as a waiting room is being phased out in favor of a new understanding and perspective: the reception space as a focal point and gathering place. A more modern approach to reception areas incorporates elements from an open house plan, specifically the idea that everyone wants to hang out in the kitchen, where life is happening, in the heart of the space. In this piece, there are several examples of different reception spaces with explanations of the design elements that are incorporated. The tone of your reception area will set the tone for the impressions and interactions in your space.

Eye-Catching Office Entrances

Though this is a sampling of office trends, the content is engaging and relevant, providing a list of attributes that directly speak to what people want in a healthy and inspiring workplace. It’s a great checklist for looking at how we’re using our office spaces, what we want our spaces to include, and whether or not these spaces are doing what we want and need them to do. Innovation at the Front Door

Reception spaces are being re-examined and reworked, and the way in which this is happening is varied. Some are embracing a more personal and homier atmosphere, whereas others have given up their under-utilized reception area to accommodate a more collaborative employee-centered space. This piece is short, and yet there are some very timely points to ponder and embody in our future design thinking and planning.
