Q&A with Borgo Contract Seating

An interview with Lucas Spassiani, Vice President

Tell us a little bit about how Borgo got started.

It all started 40 years ago with 3 guys, 1 village, and a passion for forward-thinking, well-designed, and impeccably crafted furniture. This passion led them to start a shop out of their garage in Toronto, Canada, naming the business after their hometown, which means “village” in Italian. Today, Borgo is still a family-owned and operated company with a team of dedicated and skilled employees who all share a vision and passion for excellence in seating.

What do you wish more Dealers knew about your brand and products?

Borgo is a leading resource for well-designed, customizable common area and lounge furniture. We also offer an impressive madetoorder, quick-ship program for upholstered furniture, which means you can get your order delivered in just 10 days. Dealers can choose from a variety of 140 locally sourced fabrics within this program to match their clients’ styles and preferences. No matter what space you need to furnish, we have the perfect solution for you.

What are you currently working on that we can get excited about?

We’re excited about expanding our soft-seating, common area upholstered seating to now offer booth and banquette products for corporate, educational and restaurant markets. Plus, this year, Borgo turns 40! Keep your eyes out for something amazing. On top of that, we’re planning to launch a new product line in June. Make sure to keep Borgo on your radar!

What are the main products that you offer and how do they align with the current and future needs of the market?

At Borgo, we offer a wide range of high-performance seating solutions. Our common area lounge, and other lounge pieces are quite popular in our product line. We also make frames in-house, which allows us to have greater control over the quality of our products. Recently, we invested in equipment to enhance our clients’ customizable capabilities, which allows us to offer even more tailored solutions to our customers and align with the current and future needs of the market. We’ve started cutting our own foam as well, which gives us even greater flexibility and helps keep pricing low.

Borgo has a history of taking on cool customized projects, and we love designing them! For example, we took the task of turning adult-sized chairs into child-sized versions. We’re always up for a challenge.

How do you ensure sustainability and wellness within your company?

We believe that sustainability and wellness are key components of a healthy and productive work environment. To promote these values, we implemented several initiatives that help foster a sense of community and well-being among our team members. For example, we purchased season tickets for the Toronto Blue Jays, and we organize regular potlucks and other social events to encourage team building. These initiatives help create a positive and supportive work culture. Our goal is to create a work environment that is both productive and enjoyable for our team.

How do you differentiate yourself from your competitors in terms of design, innovation, and customer service?

At Borgo, we differentiate ourselves by prioritizing customer feedback and using it to drive product development. We collaborate with three prominent Italian firms, including the famous Pininfarina firm, which designed cars for Ferrari and other brands, to expand our horizons and share designs with them. This has resulted in many of our products having an Italian influence. We also have a strong focus on customer service, which we believe sets us apart from our competitors. By prioritizing these values, we’re able to offer high-quality seating solutions that are designed to meet the unique needs of our customers.

What is your design process?

We’re committed to providing the best possible customer and user experience at every step of our design process. We offer a range of solutions for corporate, education, hospitality, and healthcare environments.

Our design process is driven by both industrial design and design thinking, which allows us to work with dealers and designers to create custom solutions that meet the needs of their clients. We take design, budget, and other factors into account to ensure that our products are both functional and beautiful. While lead times have been a challenge in the industry, we’ve overcome this obstacle with a build-to-order strategy. We also take end-user feedback into account when designing our products. In fact, 25% of what we do comes from customer requests. Even more interesting, around 20% of our product lines were originally custom requests.

What are some of the success stories or testimonials that you can share from our Dealer Partners or end-users?

We’ve had some cool custom jobs that started with a drawing. I’ll share some of the drawings and include case studies from previous clients. One that stands out was the Caribbean Airlines Lounge in Piarco, Trinidad. They decided to act on passenger feedback they received through surveys and took on a redesign. The renovated lounge is now 3150 square feet, with a bold color palette, and has availability to accommodate up to 80 guests. They named the lounge, The Caribbean Identity, bringing in a sense of belonging and uniting various Caribbean cultures.

Where would you place your products in terms of price, quality, etc.?

We strive to offer high-quality products that are also affordable. Our products are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of clients, from corporate to education to healthcare environments. We place our products in the high-design, mid-market category, which means they are priced competitively while still offering exceptional quality and design.

We’ve noticed that fixed seating is currently a hot trend, especially in corporate viewing and training rooms. We specialize in small to medium-sized jobs that include fixed seating and believe this is an area that is often overlooked when it comes to seating solutions. Fixed seating for auditoriums and other large spaces are also available. Not everyone is aware of these solutions, and we want to make sure Borgo comes to mind!

In addition to fixed seating, we’ve also found that custom booths and banquettes are hot items in the corporate and education environments. Since NeoCon, we’ve received numerous quote requests for these and believe they are a great way to add a touch of style and comfort. Everyone wants them!
